When SALT & STONE received a starred review from Kirkus, I didn’t know life could get any better. I honestly doubted I’d ever see the day I got an agent. Or sold a book. Or sold a book to a New York publisher. And I definitely, definitely didn’t think I’d ever stumble upon a link to Kirkus Reviews’ February Top 12 Books for Teens and find SALT & STONE on that list.
There are so many amazing books to choose from each month that I never imagined I’d see my own title on a list like this. The big authors like Maureen Johnson, sure. And literary classics like MACBETH, naturally. But me? Get on out of here with your crazy self.
But it happened nonetheless. And I leaped around the room. And I shoved the phone into my husband’s hands and forced his nose to touch the screen and screamed, “Do you see it, too? AM I IMAGINING THIS MADNESS?!” Turns out, I wasn’t hallucinating. I somehow magicked Kirkus into believing my book was worthy. *mixes ear wax and sunshine dust in cauldron*
